Have you ever encountered a jellyfish? I mean, you picked one up or had one swim by within inches of you!
Proverbs 1:10-19 talks about guarding yourself from the world. By making sure that just because "everyone else it doing it" you're the one that is not. Like a jellyfish, when you pick it up it goes limp, and seems more like a glob of blob than a threat, right? But, allow yourself to touch it and BAM, you're in such a state of pain that you wish more than anything you could take it away.
For those that are "jellyfish" Christians, they act in the same manner. Going through life running with the flow and then all of a sudden they are caught in the sting of the world and left with pain and sometimes scars to prove it.
I believe that for Christians making that distinction between God and the world is a fine line. There are those out there that get so close to that line that its sometimes impossible to tell the difference. We are called to be in the world BUT not of the world. I guess the real question would be, "what is being in the world but not of the world?"
Well, one of the best examples I can give, would be that of the Proverbs woman VS the world's woman. The Proverbs woman knows what her roles and duties are in her home and in society. Knowing that submission is crucial in every aspect especially the role of wife. That modesty is more than important, it is necessary and realizing that her duty is to her children and her home. The world's woman says, be who you are! Be free and "let your hair down" once in a while. Don't let yourself get stuck under some man's authority! You live your life how you want! It's your body to do with as you please!....The list goes on and on
Being in the world but not of the world in this situation is first understanding your full and complete role as a woman in accordance with the Bible and second standing up for those truths even if sometimes you're standing all alone. Jesus said, they will hate you (Luke 6:22). He said that we would suffer for His sake, but to count it all joy (James 1:2-4). He said to run with endurance the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1).
I challenge you who read this blog, because I know there are those that do! To not be a jellyfish Christian. To stand up for the sake of Christ and to always stand tall and never back down when it comes to the truths of our Lord and Savior. He willing led a devoted life to fulfill a prophecy that was meant for us and at the end graciously laid down His life so that those who believe would have the opportunity to one day spend eternity in heaven with Him. I think that the minor bumps and bruises we suffer is the least of anything that we could ever do. None of us are able to make the claims of accomplishments that Paul did and yet he realized that he was nothing. (2 Corinthians 11:5)
Philippians 3:14 "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
