Mary (Mother of Jesus) - Woman of Nobility

When thinking of another great candidate to expound on, I couldn't help but think of the most impacting man of courage the world has ever known and then my thoughts turned to his mother. Another woman of true nobility, Mary the mother of our Savior.

In the first gospel of the Bible, Matthew 1:18-25, we meet Mary. She was obviously a young woman who was betrothed to a carpenter by the name of Joseph. Seeing as how she was a virgin when the angel of the Lord visited her, I'm sure there was great concern when the time came to get ready to tell Joseph that she was with child.

I can imagine there were many fears that raced through her mind. But, obviously the Lord chose this girl for a reason. There's no way she was some run of the mill girl. No, she was apparently a woman who had integrity, understanding and deep love for her God. She was a woman of nobility that even in the face of adversity, telling her soon-to-be husband that she was with child when she had never "been" with anyone had to be gut wrenching.

Of course, she didn't cower away. She went, told him what had happened with the appearance of the angel and then "let the chips fall where they may". She trusted God, knowing that He would take care of all things. Joseph did have concerns. In fact, he was ready to quietly send her away so as not to disgrace her. But the Lord intervened and appeared to Joseph as well, informing him that what Mary had told him was truth. What comfort that must have brought to her, knowing that God had taken care of things and allowed Joseph to be informed on what God had done! I know it would have made me feel confident and safe, not to mention well taken care of!

Most of us know what happens next. The baby, Jesus, grows and grows in Mary's womb. Then it is time for Mary and Joseph to go pay their taxes in Bethlehem. Here she was, I would say 8.5-9mos pregnant, which, by that point you're ready to burst at any moment! She rides a DONKEY, all the way there. I know sometimes its hard to imagine ourselves into a situation because we live in such "modern" times but, to have ridden a donkey, that big and pregnant, she was definitely receiving favor from the Lord!

But after all those hard, long 9 mos. In a simple town, cozy and snug. In a small but humble stable. The Savior, our Messiah and Lord was born, Jesus Christ.

As a mother, I have at times tried to imagine what it was like rearing the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I mean, she knew that this baby was going to die one day and it would only be because of Him that she would be saved. These thoughts, along with many others are the reasons why I chose Mary today. She was a woman of great nobility, she was specifically chosen by God for a monumental task! She bore and raised Emmanuel, only later to see Him die a mortifying, and gruesome death on a cross. Even from the cross, Jesus was taking care of her. He appointed one of His disciples to her and gave her as his mother and him as her son.

By no means do I claim that Mary was sinless, because I know that she was not. However, I do believe that she exuded an attitude, mindset, heart and love for God that allowed her to be chosen as the giver of life to the One who gives life, Jesus.

What if God had chosen you to be the mother of the Savior? Would you have an attitude, mindset, heart and love for God that would prompt Him to choose you? How far from the mark of true nobility are you? Really, how far?
