Who do your children's hearts belong to?

Today I started on a project that I hope will bring about life-long moments of thanks.

In our house it is setup that the bedrooms are separated from the rest of the living areas. You can actually close the bedrooms off with a door. (VERY practical!!!)

So, I've started putting together what I'm calling the 'Family Share Board'. It is a giant cork board that is covered in a nice fabric and it will be a place that we will always be able to share our thoughts/feelings/hurts/prayer requests etc with one another. Everyone has their own note box (a decorated envelope with their name on it), and there are note papers with a pen easily accessible on the board as well.

Today when I hung it up, I had all the children gather around and I explained as best I could what it was. I know that as they grow up they will learn to utilize it more, but for now we are having fun putting notes in daddy's box for him to read once he gets home. We are also having a special place to hang things that we are doing during school just so daddy can see.

I know that one of the most important things that I want to instill in my children is communication. I know that for me when I was growing up, I never felt that there was communication happening between myself and my parents. I want my children to always feel that myself and their daddy are the best two people in the world to share their hearts with. Most would probably say, "You're guys are too little to even get what you're trying to do!" But I beg to differ. I know that by doing this I'm laying a foundation that we will all greatly benefit from in the future. It helps for mommy and daddy too to have a different way of sharing our hearts with one another, even if it is a note that is 2 sentences long!

I would encourage you to make sure that your lines of communication are open between you and your children. Do they seek to know what your thoughts are, or are they seeking the "wisdom" of their peers or another adult? God gave us such an amazing gift of responsibility when He gave us our children, don't let the world steal their hearts before they've even left your home...

"5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as [b]frontals [c]on your forehead. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. " Deuteronomy 6:5-9

Well I greatly appreciate your encouraging words!
I always have to remind myself, even if there is only one that reads, I will keep doing it! I've learned so much about myself by doing this and I'm grateful that there is such a thing as blogging that allows me to do this!
