Recently, my husband and I had been brain storming on how to engage our children more during family worship. We are still working on the little ones that always seem to conveniently have "ants" in their pants when its time to sit still!
I had been doing a lot of reading and looking for different ways to keep little one's attention and I found a great idea! Using the little terracotta planters for outside, I painted them and got several popsical sticks and wrote different prayer requests on them. Putting them into the pot, our little guys can go and choose their own prayer that they will get to pray (some with the help of mommy or daddy) and they LOVE IT!!!
Last night, before daddy was even able to read the Bible, they were in line waiting to get their prayer sticks and eager to grab one for us as well. The looks on their faces when it is their turn to pray is priceless! We attended our churches prayer meeting and the children blew me away with how well they acted! They knew and understood what was going on and were eager to participate.
These breakthrough moments are such an encouragement and I'm more and more grateful for them when they do come.
I would encourage you readers out there with little ones to get their hearts and minds involved in the family prayer time. No, their often times not going to make a whole lot of sense, but you're creating a mindset within them of how they can communicate with their heavenly Father. From early on, they are able to see that yes, they too can have a relationship with Him!
We have had some of our guys pray for things that make mommy and daddy open one eye, look at each other and do everything we can to keep from bursting into laughter (because its sooo cute!) We've heard, "I pray for the educational (not quite the way that word came out) DVDs, for the clouds, for the frogs so they don't get squished etc etc. They are sometimes silly, but honest and sincere prayers!
We want our children to have a desire to know Jesus more and more and to desire to be just like Him. I feel that creating a prayerful environment within you home, their safe haven, you can set the stage for the latter to take place.
But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit not the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." - Mark 10:14

Reading your comments on prayers reminds me of when we were teaching our children to pray as children, they also loved to pray for grandparents, parents , frog, roaches, etc. it did always bless my heart. to the date they all love Jesus and serve him in different capacities. their dad and i gave our kids to the Lord when they were just born and even tho sometimes they strayed Jesus always brought them back and never left them to themselves...keep up the good work...love ya
